Edmure Tully is the only son and heir of Lord Hoster Tully of Riverrun, a young knight whose gallantry and hot-headedness define his role in the early conflicts of the War of the Five Kings. As the commander of the Tully forces, he is thrust into a war he is not fully prepared for, and his actions—both his defeats and his loyal service—shape the strategic landscape of the riverlands.
Identity and Background
Edmure is the younger brother of Catelyn Stark and Lysa Arryn, and the sole male heir to Riverrun. He is described as a stocky young man with a shaggy head of auburn hair and a fiery beard, bearing the Tully coloring of fair skin, red-brown hair, and blue eyes. His father, Lord Hoster Tully, is bedridden and dying during the war, leaving Edmure to command the Tully forces in his stead. He is known for his gallantry and his quick temper, traits that both define and endanger him. He once gave the name "Littlefinger" to Petyr Baelish, a childhood nickname that stuck.
Military Command and Defeat
Edmure's first major test comes when he is tasked with defending the riverlands against Lannister aggression. He scatters small troops of men along his borders to stop Lannister raiding, a strategy that Lord Tywin Lannister and Ser Kevan Lannister exploit, destroying most of them piecemeal before they can regroup. When Jaime Lannister descends on the pass below the Golden Tooth, Edmure sends Lord Vance and Lord Piper to hold it, but the Kingslayer defeats them, killing Lord Vance. Edmure himself is later defeated in battle under the walls of Riverrun, where he is taken captive along with many of his knights and bannermen. Following his capture, Edmure is held in chains by the Lannisters within their siege camp around Riverrun. His rescue comes during the Battle of the Whispering Wood, when Robb Stark and the Blackfish launch a surprise attack on the Lannister forces. During the chaos, Lord Tytos Blackwood leads a sortie from Riverrun and finds Edmure among the captives, freeing him. After his rescue, Edmure is present at Riverrun to welcome his sister Catelyn and nephew Robb, his breastplate still scratched and dented from battle, his cloak stained by blood and smoke, bearing a bandaged wound on his neck.
Role in the War Council
After the victory at Riverrun, Edmure participates in the war council where the northern and river lords debate their next move. He sits in the high seat of the Tullys, with the Blackfish at his side. When the lords argue over whether to declare for Renly Baratheon or Stannis Baratheon, Edmure asks Robb directly, "So you mean us to declare for Stannis?" He is present when the Greatjon Umber proclaims Robb the King in the North, and he joins the acclamation, though his own authority is clearly subordinate to his nephew's newfound kingship.
